It is one thing when you are offered a substance such as marijuana at a party, and you partake, because you know you are going to face almost no consequences for your actions. But do we ever stop and think about those who may be doing the same things, but in some other setting, and will face much harsher punishments? Yes, it is important to have a society where criminals are discouraged from doing certain things because they know they are going to face a harsh penalty for their actions. But is marijuana in that list?
Do we need to live in a society where we are putting people in jail for wanting to consume a substance that is not going to do their body much harm at all? Do we want to live in a society where even those who are dealing can face such harsh consequences? It is up to each of us to figure out what type of society we want to be a part of. And ultimately, it will come down to people to figure out what type of punishments their fellow citizens should be facing for certain actions. And that is why it is so important to read about marijuana policy.
Many people think there is nothing they can do to influence policy. But it is simply untrue. The work starts with voting, whether it is in the most meaningless of local elections or at the very top. And it goes far beyond that. For instance, we can look at some of the work that was done in Massachusetts with respect to Marijuana policies. As we can see here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_for_Sensible_Marijuana_Policy, a committee was formed and they took it on themselves to try and get legalization for marijuana approved. And even though they were not fully successful in that goal, they did eventually shift their focus to a more sensible policy, where people were no longer being thrown in jail for these meaningless offenses. And if you think that is a good idea, then we encourage you to think about the type of work you may be able to do in your own state. The fact is that we are not nearly as powerless as people like to assume. If you are willing to put in the work and you believe in a cause, there is so much that you can achieve.
Are you ready to make the change in the world that you want to see? If you are, then you will want to start somewhere. And marijuana policies may be something that you do not think are hugely important, but you may want to think again. There are so many people in all the states of America who are impacted by these harsh policies. They end up spending time in jail and having criminal records all for wanting to consume a substance that you have probably tried so many times at a party or with a few friends. We know it is harmless, now we need to see changes reflected in the law.
